Medici’s villas wine tour in Carmignano area Tour Program
During Medici’s villas wine tour in Carmignano we will cover 2 small areas located north of Florence and very close to each other: Carmignano and Chianti Montalbano.
Docg since 1984, today Chianti is an extensive area covering many areas of Tuscany, for a total of 15,500 hectares of vineyard, mainly cultivated in Sangiovese.
Given the vastness of the territory, sub-zones have been identified, distinguished by both geographical coordinates and organoleptic characteristics of wines, due to different soils and climatic conditions. Two of these areas are Carmignano and Chianti Montalbano. Small and not touristic areas north of Florence.
Carmignano wine’s
Carmignano has been producing wine since Etruscan and Roman times, as evidenced by the finding of wine jars inside some Etruscan tombs and the assignment by Cesare to his veterans, between 50 and 60 BC, of some Lands between the Arno and the Ombrone, which have been cultivated with vines ever since.
Moreover, Carmignano can be proud of being chosen by Grand Duke Cosimo III de’Medici (in 1716), as one of the four wine-growing areas of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany. The “Motu proprio decree” in fact, regulated the production, the geographical limits, the trade of the wines produced in these areas, making the first “doc” available in the world.
Carmignano wine is a blend of Cabernet and San Giovese grapes.
The presence of the Cabernet has in fact been attested to in the vineyard of Carmignano for more than five centuries: it seems that the first vines have been transplanted to these hills by the desire of Caterina de ‘Medici when in the sixteenth century it was queen of France: It would confirm the same name as “French grape”, still in vogue among the old winegrowers.
During the 50-minute drive you will not be bored because you will hear stories and explanations of Tuscany and its wines, while you admire the wonderful tuscan landscape.
First winery
The first winery, is a magnificent XV century Villa, built by Medici family known as the “a hundred chimmeys”, so called for the many chimneys on the top of the building and that make it unique.
The chimneys were built not only for artistic appeal, but also for a pratical reason: to warm up the huge Villa.
The villa, which was born as a hunting lodge, became a place dedicated to the arts and now is a National monument and UNESCO Heritage since 2013, along with other villas and gardens of the Medici.
In the centuries between the walls of the Villa famous names have passed. For example in 1608 Galileo Galilei was invited by Ferdinand I to teach “mathematics” to his son Cosimo dei Medici. Leonardo da Vinci and other famous artists.
Once we arrive at the Villa you will be guided through , the vineyards, the historical garden, and finally tasting their delicious wines, one white, one rosè and 2 reds of which one is a docg chianti montalbano and the second red is the docg Carmignano.
Second winery
After this unique winery, it is time to go to the second, but not less awesome organic winery.
Also this winery was a XV century Medici villa, bought in the 20’s by the actual owner.
For the area of Carmignano, this winery has played a very important role.
Cabernet has been cultivated in this area as well as San Giovese, and this winery was the first to invent a blend of cabernet and merlot wine in 1979.
Finally after this beauty immersion it is time to feast on: a delicious home cooked lunch prepared for us at the Villa paired with their high quality wines you will taste 3 red wines and a sweet wine called vin santo.
After lunch, it is time to visit the labyrinth cellar where their wine is aged, the vinsantaia, and the olive mill.

If we have some time left, we can enjoy some more time visiting the exterior of another XV century villa built by Lorenzo il Maginifico and walk in its beautiful gardens.
We will return to Florence around 5:30 pm.

Fabulous day out. Great tour guide (Carlo). Very professional service. The three wineries we visited, Castelvecchio, Montalbino and Poggio Rozzi, were excellent and the hosts very helpful and willing to share their knowledge. Lunch at Montalbino winery was delicious and the paired wine were also very good, in particular their Trebbiano. I would definitely recommend this tour.

What a perfect day spent in the Tuscan countryside touring 3 distinctive wineries! This tour was a highlight of our trip and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a more intimate wine experience that the large-scale tour bus companies can offer. Our guide, Filippo, was engaging, knowledgable, and passionate about Tuscan wine-making. We were able to interact directly with the wine-makers at all properties and tasted wonderful wines at all 3 wineries we visited. The views were spectacular and the food pairings delicious as well!
We had the best time during our wine tour with Carlo. It was not only a great way to see the beautiful Tuscan country side, but the 3 boutique wineries made us feel right at home. One of them even cooked us a homemade lunch - which was delicious. Carlo was great to have with us for the day and was just as knowledgable as some of the on-site staff at the wineries. We learned so much and left with a newfound respect for Chianti Classico and Extra Virgin Italian Olive Oil. You even have opportunities to purchase wine and oil from the wineries and ship back to the states. We would highly recommend Angela’s Wine Tours. Was truly one of the biggest highlights of our trip.

We had a great day with our guide Francesca visiting three boutique family wineries. Convenient meeting location in the heart of Florence. Great wines, great education about the history of wine in the region. We had only four in our van instead of the maximum 8 so we were pretty efficient at each winery.Would definitely recommend !
This was the BEST tour. We visited three countries over two weeks and everyone said this tour was their favorite day. Fillipo was our guide and very knowledgeable and kind. We picked this tour from Florence as it seemed to be one of the few that offers small groups (max 8 people) in comparison to some of the companies that would take groups of up to 25-50 people and it was definitely a great decision!Visiting small 3 family run wineries in Chianti with our very knowledgeable guide, Carlo who was like an old friend on the day.The wine and food we had on the day was also amazing, only shame was that I couldn’t ship it back to Australia!If you are looking for a good winery tour from Florence I highly suggest this one :)

Cannot recommend this company enough! Did the Chianti 3 wineries tour with them and it was spectacular! Carlo was our guide and he was extremely knowledgeable and so much fun!They keep the group size small (HUGE plus in Florence) and the vineyards they pick are all small, family owned vineyards with some exquisite wines (see photos of the vineyards themselves). They even accommodate vegetarian and vegan diet options without compromising on any taste! Would 100% come back to do more wine tours with them!
I have been on three tours with this company and two were with Filippo. I have had an amazing time on all of them. I brought friends and family who I wanted to experience the magic of the region and of Tuscan wines. Filippo was fantastic. He shares great information and is open to talking all day. You learn a lot and have a wonderful experience that feels personal and special.
Filippo was a wonderful tour guide today on our wine, truffle and cheese tour. The 3 wineries we went to all had something different and special about them. Meeting the owners of each winery and hearing how excited they were about their wines was very interesting. Today was our last day in Florence and it was a perfect ending to an amazing trip. Would 100% recommend this tour.

Book this tour!!! I loved doing it with a smaller company, it was fantastic! The day was paced wonderfully - tastings that felt thorough and not rushed, and a lovely lunch! The wineries we visited were small, family owned and you could really feel the passion in all of the winemakers. Our tour guide Carlo was the best!! This was our favorite thing in Florence. Everyone in our group had a great time. I learned a lot and never felt silly for asking what I now know to be silly question. Francesca was always willing to share her knowledge and made sure there was a vegetarian option for me.

He made the tour incredibly personal - even showing us where his 99 year old grandmother lives! This is a must do while visiting Tuscany. This was one of the best experiences we had during our two week trip to Europe! We did the 3 Winery Tour; our guide, Carlo, was amazing! He was a great driver and so, so informative. Each of the wineries we went to were incredibly authentic family-run operations that were each unique in their own ways. This is well worth the price and an incredible way to spend a day in Tuscany.

We went on the Chianti tour yesterday with Francesca and it was wonderful. Not only was Francesca just a generally knowledgeable and kind person, but she is also a sommelier! I loved all of the teaching she shared. We went to 3 small boutique wineries and met the owners at each one with a lovely full tasting. We also had an amazing lunch at our second stop. This was such a great tour! We viewed 3 different wineries and had 3-4 wines at each location along with a selection of snacks and food.The guide was great and answered all our questions along with giving us a rundown of information about wine, Italy's regulations and history on wine, etc. Very fun and good.

The wine tour might have been the highlight of our trip to Italy. Filippo, our guide, was very knowledgeable and explained a lot about the history of winemaking in Chianti and what to look for when tasting and purchasing wine. All three wineries were beautiful and very different. I highly, highly recommend.

AMAZING! My husband and I, along with two of our friends recently visited Italy and fell in love with the country! During our stay in Florence we booked a trip with Angela to explore Tuscany. The wineries she hand selected for our group were phenomenal - all were small production wineries that took the time to teach us about their wine production process, the correct way to smell/taste wine, and much more. I highly recommend booking with Angie if you plan to explore Tuscany during your trip to Italy. It was definitely one of the highlights of our vacation! Thank you Angie!!!
This was the highlight of our trip to Italy! We went in the off-season (end of November) and it was still beautiful and perfect. Our highly qualified guide, Filippo, was the best! So knowledgeable of the wines, wineries, and history of the region due to being a local to a nearby village in this Chianti region (also gave plenty of other suggestions in Florence). We already rethink our wine shopping now that we have the knowledge of what to look for to have a wonderful and headache free wine (all the wineries were organic so less sulfites, yay!). Each of the wineries offers cheese with bread and unbelievably fresh olive oil (November is the time for fresh press harvest) and the 2nd winery (Lombricaia di Montalbino) was where we had a delicious lunch with the most bubbly and passionate guide for the winery, Chiara. It was an authentic tuscan meal with a beautiful view of the countryside in a very charming restaurant that felt like we were having a family dinner. The day flew by and it was the best part of our trip due to it feeling so intimate and relaxed. Highly recommend this, well worth the price!

Our guide Filippo was just fantastic; very friendly and knowledgeable sharing all kinds of information about the region, the agriculture, food, the wineries and of course...wine! The wineries and countryside were really gorgeous, and the it's obvious how deeply ingrained the love of their craft is. Highly highly recommend Filippo and this company...it's a must if in Florence to get out into the countryside and see how the agriculture, the architecture and the people come together to produce such an exquisite wine. What an amazing tour with Claudia! Passionate, knowledgeable, and so much fun learning about Chianti, DOCG, DOC, IGT, and super Tuscany wines. We did a private tour on Sunday. Claudia was right on time at the meeting point, and really went above and beyond by sharing recipes with us, helping us get transportation for all the wines we purchased, and helping get us a taxi the next day. Highly recommend!
We took a wine tour with Andrea and had a blast! Not only were the wineries we visited all unique but Andrea spent time to explain how taste wine and what to look for in color, taste, etc. All three wineries served Chianti but each one had unique other offerings. They explained the process of winemaking and showed us cellars and the property. The perfect day trip from Florence. Such a fun group and the best tour guide!
