Chianti Wine Tour and Machiavelli’s Villa from Florence
A 15th-century villa where Machiavelli lived his years of exile. A noble family who has farmed these hills since the 18th century. And a Chianti wine poured by the people who made it. Not your average day in Tuscany.

Most wine tours take you to a winery. This one takes you to a 15th-century villa where Niccolò Machiavelli once lived, owned since the 18th century by one of Florence’s most ancient noble families, set in the heart of the Chianti Classico hills. Then to lunch at one of our exclusive small-production wineries. It is, as days go, a particularly good one.
Who Was Machiavelli and Why Does His Villa Matter?
Niccolò Machiavelli is one of the most influential political thinkers in history. Born in Florence in 1469, he served the Florentine Republic as a senior diplomat and political advisor for fourteen years, travelling to the courts of France, Germany, and the Papal States on behalf of the city. When the Medici returned to power in 1512, he was dismissed, briefly imprisoned and tortured on suspicion of conspiracy, and then exiled to the Tuscan countryside.
It was during that forced exile that he wrote The Prince, the work that made him famous and gave the word “Machiavellian” to every language on earth. He finished it in 1513, probably in the hills south of Florence, surrounded by the vines and olive groves he was reduced to farming after the loss of everything he had worked for.
He described his evenings in exile in a letter to a friend: how he would change out of his dirty farm clothes at dusk, put on his court robes, and sit down to spend the evening hours reading the ancient writers and thinking about politics. A man of extraordinary intelligence, forced to tend chickens in the Chianti hills, writing a masterpiece in his spare time.
The villa associated with this period of his life sits in the countryside outside Florence, in the Chianti Classico zone. It dates to the 15th century and has been in the hands of the Marchesi Bartolini Baldelli, one of Tuscany’s most distinguished noble families, since the 18th century. The estate is still a working winery, still producing Chianti Classico from the same vineyards that surrounded the villa when Machiavelli walked its grounds five centuries ago.

What You Will See and Do
The morning begins at the villa. You will meet the General Manager or estate representative, who will take you through the property: the historic rooms, the cellars, the vineyards, and the beautifully maintained garden. The garden is particularly worth lingering in: carefully curated, with plants, aromatic herbs, seasonal flowers, lemon trees, and views over the Tuscan countryside that have not changed materially since the 15th century.
Inside the villa, the architecture and atmosphere of a Florentine noble residence of the Renaissance period is largely intact. Standing in these rooms, knowing that the man who wrote the most famous political treatise of the Western world spent years here in reluctant rural exile, gives the visit a particular quality. History in Tuscany is not something behind glass. It is the stone under your feet and the wine in your glass.
The tasting at the villa includes Chianti, Chianti Riserva and a Super Tuscan wine, poured against the backdrop of the estate that produced them. An olive oil tasting is also included.
Lunch at One of Our Wineries
After the morning at the villa, the tour continues to lunch at one of our exclusive small-production wineries in the Chianti zone. These are producers we have worked with for years, who receive only our groups. No walk ins, no other tour operators. The lunch is a traditional Tuscan meal, cooked at the estate, with wine.
In summer, lunch is served outside in the courtyard or on the terrace. In autumn and winter, in the historic kitchen of the property. Either way, it is the wine that stays with you, poured by the producer who made it, in the place where it was aged, with no intermediary between the glass and the story behind it.

This Tuscan wine tour was a perfect blend of history, stunning scenery, and incredible wines. Francesca was an awesome guide. Each vineyard offered unique tastings and insights into the region’s winemaking passion. The breathtaking landscapes and delicious local lunch made the experience truly unforgettable. A must-do for any wine lover!
Got tipsy, shipped wine back to the USA, and came home full.
Thank you
Felippo our guide was awesome. 10/10 Definitely worth every penny
Our guide Carlo was extremely informative and friendly. He got to know every one on the tour and made sure we were having a good day! Would book again next time I’m in Florence and would recommend to anyone looking to do a wine tour from Florence!
Thank you so much Carlo!
Would definitely recommend !
The wineries where beautiful with a lovely lunch included
Visiting small 3 family run wineries in Chianti with our very knowledgeable guide, Carlo who was like an old friend on the day.
The wine and food we had on the day was also amazing, only shame was that I couldn’t ship it back to Australia!
If you are looking for a good winery tour from Florence I highly suggest this one :)
They keep the group size small (HUGE plus in Florence) and the vineyards they pick are all small, family owned vineyards with some exquisite wines (see photos of the vineyards themselves). They even accommodate vegetarian and vegan diet options without compromising on any taste! Would 100% come back to do more wine tours with them!
This is a great wine tour!
The guide was great and answered all our questions along with giving us a rundown of information about wine, Italy's regulations and history on wine, etc. Very fun and good.
She is so knowledgeable and we learnt so much.
The wineries we went to were all great and we also had a lovely lunch at one of them.
This was a highlight of our trip, and we would definitely recommend it to anyone.
Tack Francesca 😊

My wife and I took Angie’s Castle & Wine tour in late May. We had a fun, small group with Barbara as our guide. Barbara was very genuine and truly expressed an interest in wanting all of us to enjoy our day, as well as our time in Tuscany Would I recommend the tour? Yes, without a doubt. If you are a red wine drinker, these are smaller producers that you are most likely not able to purchase in the U.S. They make excellent wines, so treat yourself and send some home Our wines arrived in four weeks. Grazie Mille Angie and Barbara for a terrific day!

An amazing day touring the Tuscany wine region! I would especially like to thank Francesca for making my 50th birthday a memory I will treasure forever! Her knowledge of wines, the countryside, olive oil, etc. was extraordinary! The wineries and the owners (Stephania and Marco) were excellent hosts and provided us with samples of the most amazing wines and olive oils. I would highly recommend your company to anyone visiting the Tuscany region! Again, thanks!!!

I went on a wine tasting tour with Angie a few years ago and because of the great experience I booked again for May 2013. Angie’s tour was already fully booked so we were in Olivia’s group, another awesome day! The whole region is beautiful and there are plenty of tour operators but for me Angie’s personal service and small groups make her the go-to company for your Tuscan wine tasting tour. A bonus with the smaller groups is that Angie takes you to small and medium sized wineries, not the giant mass production places, so you really get face to face time with the owner/winemakers.
