Who needs an excuse to tour Tuscany? An opportunity to travel the Tuscan countryside is everyone’s dream. A landscape dotted with ancient farmhouses, olive groves and charming towns with vineyards everywhere you look. What better reason to visit Tuscany than during the Expo of Chianti Classico held annually in September in the town of Greve in Chianti.
Tuscan Town of Greve in Chianti
Greve in Chianti is one of the nine communes of the Chianti Classico wine region located about 30 kilometers south of Florence. It is easily accessible via car along the main wine route: the Chiantigiana. In case you don’t have the accessibility of a vehicle you can take one of the most popular wine tour from Florence.
Greve in Chianti is a quaint town with its heart focused around Piazza Matteotti, a triangular square with covered porticos lined with artisan shops. At its center it hosts the statue of Giovanni da Verrazzano, the famous explorer who discovered Manhattan in US and Santa Croce at the base of the square. It’s the perfect place to sit back, relax and observe true Tuscan living.
Expo of Chianti Classico wine
Greve in Chianti hosts the 49th expo of Chianti Classico September 5-8, 2019. This wine event is held the first weekend of September annually.
The wine festival begins Thursday night starting at 5pm and continues throughout the weekend. Friday, Saturday and Sunday visitors can partake in the festivities from 11- 8pm. In order to enter to the event requires the purchase of a wine glass that costs about 10 euro. With this purchase each individual gets the opportunity to taste all the wines you want.
In addition to wine tasting there is olive oil to sample along with fresh food. During the wine festival there is music playing throughout Piazza Matteotti. A parade is held finishing off the weekend with an awards ceremony. A wonderful way to immerse oneself in everything that Tuscany has to offer.
